Frequently Asked Questions
Find what you need to know about Planet Youth and how we work to build stronger communities
The purpose of Planet Youth Sudbury-LaCloche is to learn about what makes our communities strong and where we can do a better job supporting our youth. We want to identify what resources we already have to help youth thrive when facing the challenges of growing up. We also want to learn where there are gaps in our support and address them. The goal is to ensure that all youth have the tools they need to live happy and healthy lives and reduce the likelihood that they will turn to substances.
The survey results will show us what is working and what is missing. With this information, we can create spaces and programs where youth feel safe, supported, and able to thrive.
Youth will answer questions about school, home, friends, interests, and what they do for fun. This helps us understand their challenges and what makes them feel safe and supported. Topics will include:
• school life
• family life
• leisure time
• screen use
• well-being
• substance use
• community
• gambling
• violence
• online behaviours
Yes. All answers are completely anonymous. Researchers at Planet Youth will analyze the data. Schools will only see average results, not individual answers. The community will only see overall findings.
We will use the results to set priorities and plan programs that help youth. This might look like:
• increasing access to current programs and services
• solving problems that limit participation in extracurricular activities
• creating new programs based on what we hear
• connecting the community to better serve youth
No, not all schools. Schools will be chosen carefully to represent the community. The supports we create will help all youth and families, even if their school wasn’t surveyed.
Changes will come from what youth tell us they need. This could mean more extracurricular programs, family events, or support for stress, schoolwork, and friendships. We will listen and act on their ideas.
A group called the Prevention Coalition will lead the work. It includes schools, researchers, decision-makers, community organizations, and others that want to help youth thrive.
Real change takes time. We’re committing to five years of learning, listening, and improving so youth have lasting support for years to come.
Planet Youth has helped communities around the world support youth. Many places in Canada like Calgary, North Bay, Timmins, and Lanark County are already using this model and seeing positive results.
