What is Planet Youth?
Planet Youth builds stronger communities through data-driven insights and collaborative action.

What is Planet Youth?
Planet Youth is based on the Icelandic Prevention Model. This is a proven framework to create healthier environments for youth. The model is locally led to increase well-being and reduce substance use among youth.
The model brings families, youth, schools, and community groups together. We will use local data to create programs and support systems for youth. This will help young people grow into resilient, healthy adults.
Where is the model taking place?
We’re launching Planet Youth in the Sudbury and LaCloche regions. To better understand how we can support youth, we will survey grade 10 students in local schools. This data will inform programs and services for the entire community.
Calgary, Timmins, North Bay, Lanark County, and other communities have also adapted this model.
How does it work?
The model is designed to repeat, with new surveys every few years.
Phase 1
The first phase builds a strong community foundation. We will connect and build a network of engaged community partners to be champions. This is called the Prevention Coalition. It is made up of schools, researchers, decision-makers, community organizations, and others that want to help youth thrive.
Phase 2
The next phase involves data collection. We will survey grade 10 students about their lives, including what they do at home, school, and for fun with their friends. The Prevention Coalition uses this data to create programs and support systems for youth.
Phase 3
The last phase involves committing to long-term change. We’re committing to five years of learning, listening, and improving so youth have lasting support. We will monitor progress over time.
